BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ADDIS ABABA -- The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ethiopia rose to 131,546 after 351 new cases were reported, the East African country's Ministry of Health said on Monday.

The ministry said that the number of COVID-19 related deaths in the country reached 2,033 as of Monday evening, including three new deaths reported during the last 24-hour period.

Some 116,335 COVID-19 patients have recovered so far, including 188 in the last 24-hour period, the ministry added.

QUITO -- Ecuador registered 162 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing its total caseload to 231,644, the ministry of public health reported on Monday.

In addition, the ministry confirmed three new deaths from the virus, raising the national death toll to 9,717.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil registered another 452 deaths from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 210,299, its Health Ministry reported Monday.

Another 23,671 COVID-19 cases were reported over the past day, bringing the total caseload to 8,511,770, the ministry said.

Brazil has the world's second-highest COVID-19 death toll after the United States and the third-highest caseload, following the United States and India.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. COVID-19 confirmed cases topped 24 million, with total deaths approaching 400,000 on Monday, two days ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration.

The country recorded over 24.04 million cases and more than 398,000 deaths as of 5:00 p.m. Monday, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
