BEIJING, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 9,534,964 on Thursday as 35,551 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, according to the latest data from the federal health ministry.

According to the data, the death toll mounted to 138,648 as 526 patients died since Wednesday morning.

ISLAMABAD -- The number of Pakistan's COVID-19 positive cases has surged to 406,810 with 3,499 people being tested positive of the viral disease over the last 24 hours, the country's health ministry said on Thursday.

A total of 8,205 people died and 346,951 recovered from the disease in the country which is battling a serious second wave, the ministry said on its website.

LOS ANGELES -- California reported a record daily increase of more than 20,000 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, health authorities said.

The California Department of Public Health confirmed 20,759 new cases over the past 24 hours in a daily release, significantly surpassing the previous high of 18,350 cases set last week. But officials said that "numbers do not represent true day-over-day change as these results include cases from prior to yesterday."

WASHINGTON -- A total of 2,713 COVID-19 deaths were registered in the past 24 hours in the United States, the record daily increase since April, bringing the national tally to 273,181, showed data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Meanwhile, the country recorded 195,121 new COVID-19 infections and thus has the highest number of both infections and deaths worldwide.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil's COVID-19 death toll reached 174,515 on Wednesday, after 698 more patients died in the last 24 hours, the country's health ministry said.

Meanwhile, tests detected 49,863 new infections, bringing the total tally to 6,436,650.

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's health ministry on Wednesday reported 11,251 new cases of COVID-19, and 800 additional deaths, bringing the national caseload to 1,133,613 and death toll to 107,565.

The 11,251 new cases over the past day represent one of the biggest one-day increases recorded by the Latin American country since the outbreak of the pandemic.

BEIJING -- A total of 18 COVID-19 patients were newly discharged from hospitals after recovery across the Chinese mainland on Wednesday, the National Health Commission said in a daily report Thursday.

There were 266 confirmed cases still being treated, including six in severe conditions, the report showed.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported nine new cases of COVID-19 in managed isolation on Thursday. There are no new community cases.

Of the nine new cases, four are active cases while five are termed as "historical cases." People with a historical COVID-19 infection are not infectious, according to the Ministry of Health.
