QUITO, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed and three others were injured when two vehicles collided in Mejia, a town south of Ecuador's capital Quito, the integrated emergency service ECU 911 reported on Sunday.

The local Fire Department said via Twitter that among the injured was a young girl "in critical condition."

The accident was reported through a call to the 911 emergency hotline, which dispatched first responders to attend to the victims.

Between Oct. 1 and 16, in the north-central province of Pichincha, where Mejia and Quito are located, 312 traffic accidents were reported, according to ECU 911.

In Ecuador, traffic has been restricted due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, with odd and even license plates able to circulate on alternate days.
