BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ALGIERS -- Algerian Health Minister Abderrahman Benbouzid said Monday that a renewal of nationwide lockdown "is not on the agenda right now," but the government will choose "a targeted lockdown" in regions with a significant increase in coronavirus cases.

"The failure to comply with precautionary and preventive measures" were among many reasons for the rebound of cases in Algeria, Benbouzid said in a press conference.

WUHAN -- No new confirmed, asymptomatic or suspected cases of COVID-19 were reported in central China's Hubei Province Monday, the provincial health commission said Tuesday.

Currently, Hubei has a total of three asymptomatic cases and 135 close contacts under medical observation.

BUJUMBURA -- The Burundian government on Monday kicked off a mass screening campaign in the commercial captial Bujumbura to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Three sites of a technical school, a hotel and a Catholic parish were chosen to screen people who voluntarily receive the test for the coronavirus.

LOS ANGELES -- U.S. public health officials reported Monday an additional 48 COVID-19 deaths in Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the United States with a population of over 10 million, taking its death toll to 3,534.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also reported 1,584 new cases of novel coronavirus infections, bringing the caseload to 116,570 in the metropolitan area.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil's COVID-19 death toll surpassed 65,000 on Monday after 620 more patients died in the previous 24 hours, bringing the total to 65,487, the Ministry of Health said.

The total number of people who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus since the start of the outbreak rose to 1,623,284, following a daily surge of 20,229 cases.

WASHINGTON -- Keisha Lance Bottoms, the mayor of Atlanta which is the capital city of southeastern U.S. state of Georgia, said on Monday she has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

"COVID-19 has literally hit home," Bottoms tweeted.

"I have had NO symptoms and have tested positive," she said on Twitter.
